Pointe-à-Callière

Go down beneath Place Royale and you are walking on the exact spot where Montreal began: the Ville-Marie fort, founded by Maisonneuve and Jeanne Mance in 1642. Opened in 1992 after a decade of excavation, it is Canada's only major archaeology museum and the only one in North America built directly over authentic remains.
